Urban Housing and Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania

by Milton Makongoro Mahanga

This study is based on research carried out in planned and unplanned areas of Yombo Vituka, Dar es Salaam. It argues that adequate housing for the urban poor is a source of income generation and therefore a means of improving livelihoods. It reiterates that there is willingness and ability amongst the urban poor to contribute towards social service delivery and housing conditions; but that land allocation systems and poor people's access to credit remain a major constraint. The author is a renowned academic in Tanzania and the Member of Parliament for Ukonga Constituency in Dar es Salaam.
