The Social Sciences and Africa's Future

edited by Knowledge Rajohane Matshedisho, Claude Abe

This is the first title in a new series Interventions, a strategic initiative by CODESRIA, aimed at promoting the research output of the younger generation of academics and scholars in Africa, and encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences between young researchers about African issues. The series intends to create an opportunity for a younger generation of Africans, which is of key demographic importance, to become more engaged in public and/or academic debates about the future of their continent.

The five essays included in this volume were selected from entries submitted to an essay writing competition, held to mark the CODESRIA's thirtieth anniversary. The competition invited aspiring writers and scholars under the age of thirty to reflect on the role of the social sciences in the construction of the future on the continent, and on the relationship between scientific knowledge in improving both individuals’ lives and furthering the advancement and development of societies.

'testimony to the fact that young Africans have not given up the struggle for a better future. The authors are self- confident, making themselves heard, creating dialogues and defining new directions in their quest to play a role in the social sciences in the service of African development, and to find ways to reflect on the future that Africa is presently so lacking.'
