Swahili lecturer and author in Germany

This book presents a study of the life history of Mtoro bin Mwinyi Bakari (c. 1869 - 1927). Mtoro bin Mwinyi Bakari grew up and studied Islamic Sciences in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. He became a Swahili lecturer and author in Germany and is known to have written Desturi za Wasuaheli, an important work in Swahili culture. The book introduces the wider historical context of his writings, and, in particular, reconstructs the racism and discrimination in both the colonial and metropolitan contexts, features which negatively influenced his career and his life as a whole. The study also offers insights into contributions of the colonized to the study of African languages and cultures during this same historical context.

“… Sa biographie est riche d’enseignements, à la fois comme portrait d’un homme, mais aussi comme évocation d’un pays, d’une société et d’une époque. Pour ce faire, l’auteur a dû rechercher patiemment les traces d’une vie dont il reste si peu, et il faut ici souligner la richesse du travail effectué dans les archives, en Allemagne comme en Tanzanie, où ces recherches s’accompagnent d’investigations sur le terrain. Travail ô combien difficile, mais qui brosse le tableau passionnant d’une époque. À travers la vie de Mtoro, homme lettré, fin connaisseur de sa culture, se lit aussi toute l’historie de l’Allemagne colonisatrice dans laquelle, progressivement, se développent les théses qui mèneront au nazisme…l’ouvrage illustre toute une période historique, qui ne manque pas d’ailleurs d’éveiller de tristes résonances contemporaines, notamment à propos des rapports d’exploitation dans le monde du travail.”
