Cet ouvrage propose un état des lieux de la production littéraire francophone en Afrique à la fin du vingtième siècle. En moins d’un siècle, le champ des littératures africaines – et c’est bien le pluriel qu’il faut utiliser – s’est considérablement transformé. Il se caractérise aujourd’hui par une vitalité et d’une diversité remarquables. Outre les continuités thématiques évidentes, ces mutations entraînent inévitablement de nouvelles problématiques, qui à leur tour demandent de mobiliser de nouveaux outils critiques et méthodologiques. Que signifie, par exemple, en l’an 2000, être un «écrivain africain ?» Quels rapports à l’Histoire, au temps, au corps se jouent-ils dans la fiction contemporaine? Comment les auteurs «travaillent-ils» la langue française, la soumettant parfois à des renversements inédits ? Quelles Afriques, quels discours sur l’Afrique surgissent de ces textes ?

Autour de telles questions, cet ouvrage est conçu pour donner aux chercheurs en littératures et en sciences humaines le désir et les moyens d’aborder les nouveaux textes dont s’est enrichie la littérature mondiale ces vingt dernières années.

What does it mean to be an African writer or a Francophone African writer at the beginning of the twenty first century? How are history, time and the body represented in contemporary Francophone African fiction? How are authors working with, changing and subverting the French language? How is 'Africa' represented in the literary imagination? What discourses on Africa arise from literary texts? This study takes stock of Francophone African literary production at the end of the twentieth century, proposing that the literatures are characterised by a remarkable vitality and diversity. The work also introduces the new literary texts of the 1980s and 1990s, which have enriched world literature, and considers how new subjects and thematic continuities are giving rise to changing critical approaches and methodologies.
