Before They Came
Before They Came recreates the world lived by Africans before the onset of the white colonialists into the Africa. It tells a localized story of an orphaned boy, Ugagwu, who overcame daunting obstacles placed in his path to become “a prosperous farmer, a great hunter, a dancer, a great wrestler, a masquerader, a hero in battle, a renowned palm wine tapper and above all, a holder of three titles.” The book contains an explanation of the Igbo words and phrases and is directed at school-going children and youth willing to learn still useful lessons that can be gleaned from the African past.
